While Manna Friedmann never wanted children of her own in the past, she sometimes has regrets as she gets older. It was only recently that she realized that one should have children of one’s own. ‘Those who have children of their own are simply different” (Friedmann, interview, 28 June, 1998). She and Anneliese Schnurmann agreed that they were now, so to speak, the ones who were the mothers of their ‘substitute children’, up to the third generation. Manna Friedmann was moved by a film that caused her to realize very clearly that genes are immortal and therefore life goes on and on in this way (Friedmann, interview, 28 June, 1998).

I think I can say that at every stage of my existence, I have always thought that it should at least last for a long time as it is now. I have also enjoyed every stage of my work colossally, with the little ones, with the big ones, with the social welfare [work].
